Who is the training course for?
These sessions are for students who are expecting to attempt the Physics Olympiad National Qualifying Examination (NQE) on 19 August. The NQE's are primarily aimed at students in Year 11, however, in the past, capable students in lower levels, notably in Years 9 and 10, have achieved excellent results. Several of our past students have successfully competed in the NQE and have been selected for the Physics Olympiad training squads.
These classes are also open to all students wishing to extend their knowledge of physics beyond the current senior school syllabus. Some background in physics is expected.
Staff
Lectures will be given by a lecturing staff from the School of Physics, University of Sydney who have extensive lecturing experience at all levels of physics.
Content
The series of 10 lectures will cover all topics in the syllabus required for the NQE. The syllabus covers:
- mechanics,
- oscillations and waves,
- electric charges and fields,
- electric current,
- thermodynamics, and
- experimental skills and processes.
Each of these topics encompasses a broad range of subjects and will cover more material than a school syllabus.
Times & Location
Time: 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm on Thursday nights. The dates are: 28 May - 13 August (excluding school holidays 16 and 23 July).
Location: Slade Lecture Theatre on the ground floor of the Physics Building, Physics Road, University of Sydney.
Cost
$300.00 (GST free) for ten 2-hour lectures.
Textbook
Buying a textbook is not essential for this course since lecture notes will be given out. However, for the student wanting more extensive material than that given in the lectures and lecture notes, then any first year university physics textbook will be more than adequate for this course, regardless of its publication date. Second-hand bookshops usually have such books. However, the book currently used by first year university physics students at the University of Sydney is University Physics (11th edition, with Modern Physics) by Young and Freedman, and is available from the University Co-Op Bookshop.
Closing Date for registration
To register for the training course, complete the registration form and return it with payment to Louise Freys, Assistant Marketing Manager (see below for details).
The registration form, with payment, must be received by 5.00 pm Friday 15th May. However course numbers are limited.

Please note:
Students must register through their school for the NQE. Participation in the Physics Olympiad Training at the University of Sydney does not mean the student is enrolled for the examination.
