Chemistry Olympiad Training Program 2009
Unfortunately, due to a small number of registrations we are not able to offer the Physics Olympiad Training Program in 2009.
Who is the training course for?
The Chemistry Olympiad training course is for students who intend to attempt the Chemistry Olympiad National Qualifying Examination (NQE) on 2 September 2009. Past students have successfully competed in the NQE, been selected for the National Team sent to the Olympiad training course in Canberra and have been medal-winning Olympiad scholars.
The course is also an excellent preparation for students who wish to revise thoroughly for the NSW HSC.
Staff
Lectures will be given by staff members from the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.
Content
Content will be designed to cover all topics examined in the NQE and therefore will be wider than that covered by the school syllabus.
Topics will include:
- Gases and Gas Laws
- Atomic Structure and Periodicity
- Bonding, Oxidation and Reduction
- Electrochemistry
- Chemical Equilibria
- Acids & Bases, pH
- Chemical Analysis
- Organic Chemistry
- Main Group Elements
Time & Location
Time: 5:00 - 6:30 pm on Wednesday nights, excluding the school holiday period. The dates are:
17 June - 26 August (excluding 15 and 22 July)
Location: School of Chemistry, University of Sydney, (City Rd entrance).
Cost
$300.00 (GST free).
Textbook & Course Notes
It is recommended that students purchase the textbook Chemistry by Blackman, Bottle, Schmid, Mocerino and Wille. Students may purchase the textbook (approx. $120.00) which will be on sale prior to the lecture on the first evening.

To register for the training course, complete the registration form and return it with payment to Louise Freys, School Programs & Undergraduate Recruitment Manager (see below for details).
The registration form, with payment, must be received by 5.00 pm Friday 5 June. However course numbers are limited.
