2010 CSI: Cool Science Investigator
The theme for the 2010 event will be CSI: Cool Science Investigator, which involves forensics and all things related. We demonstrate through hands-on lectures and presentations the reality behind a lot of popular forensic television shows. Students perform blood typing, DNA analysis (interpretation of gel electrophoresis), 'clean' a digital photograph and undertake fingerprint analysis to collect evidence against six suspects in a mock crime scene that has taken place on our campus.

What happened at the 2009 Sydney Science Experience?
In 2009, 120 students attended the University of Sydney's Science Experience. These students travelled to our campus from across the State to become a CSI for three days.
We are of course delighted to have so many students attend from rural and regional areas.
On day one, all the CSI's are given a crime scene briefing which provides a summary of the scene and some background information on the suspects. They spend the next three days learning from professionals in the field (for example there were lectures from a forensic pathologist and a member from Forensic Services in the Police Service) as well as utilising workshop sessions to test evidence to determine which suspect to take to trial.
The final day wraps up with a trial run by the CSI's and closes with a Dr Karl talk and presentation of certificates.

1. How do I get to the University of Sydney?

3. What time do I arrive and leave each day?
Each morning please gather inside the foyer area of the Eastern Ave Complex, Eastern Ave, The University of Sydney.

4. Where do I get dropped off and picked up from each day?
Each morning, students should meet inside the foyer area of the Eastern Ave Complex which is located on Eastern Ave, the University of Sydney, Camperdown. Eastern Ave is closest to the City Road Gate entrance to the university grounds. Students should also arrange to meet their parents or guardians here (at the Eastern Ave Complex) to be picked up at the end of each day. Taxis can be ordered to drop off and pick up students at this point.
If you are catching public transport there are major bus stops on City Road close to Eastern Ave. If you are catching a bus from the City there is a bus stop virtually at the front door to the University.
5. What if I am catching the train?
The closest train station to the University of Sydney is Redfern Station. If you are catching the train to this station it is a good idea to contact Louise on (02) 9351 5268 so she knows to expect you each morning from this station.
You should exit Lawson Street and travel along Lawson Street until you come to the lights. Turn left at the lights onto Abercrombie Street, then right onto Codrington St, continue straight onto Butlin Avenue. Continue on until you come to City Road, cross City Road and enter the City Road gates to the University of Sydney.
Or
Exit at Lawson Street, travel along Abercrombie Street, onto Raglan Street, through the University of Sydney, turn left onto Maze Crescent, right onto Butlin Ave. Cross at City Road to enter the University of Sydney.
If you are catching a train to Central, it is about a 15-minute walk from Central Station along Broadway to The University of Sydney. You can alternatively catch a bus from Central to the City Road Gates.
6. What bus can I catch from the City to the University of Sydney?
Buses to City Road from the City (Loftus Street): 422, 423 (Circular Quay) 426, 428
Buses to Parramatta Road from the City (Town Hall): 412, 413, 461, 480, 483 (Circular Quay) 436, 437, 438, 440

7. Can my parents park on campus?
It is advisable that parents do not park on campus as it can be costly and parking is very limited. If they do park they will need to purchase a parking ticket from the vending machine and place it in their car. Eastern Avenue is now a pedestrian walkway. The closest parking area is adjacent to City Rd near the Madsen Building.
8. What if I arrive late to the workshop?
Don't stress, we understand that Sydney traffic can be unpredictable so if you think you are going to be late call Louise on (02) 9351 5268 or 0434 071 685, otherwise once you arrive at the University of Sydney, wait at the designated, signed area and someone will come and get you and take you to the relevant room.
9. What if I need to leave early?
A roll is taken each day as we need to know your whereabouts whilst you are in our duty of care. It is important for us to know where you are and that you are safe at all times. If you need to leave early come and speak to Louise on the morning you need to leave.
10. Can I leave the grounds during lunch breaks?
Students are not permitted to leave the University of Sydney grounds during lunch times.
11. What should I wear?
Since some of your time will be spent in laboratories, it is important that you wear suitable clothing – preferably cotton clothing and closed toed shoes at all times.

13. Lunch
We will be supplying lunch everyday. There will be a Pizza Smorgasboard for lunch on Friday. There are also facilities on campus to buy food. If you have made a note of any dietary requirements on your registration form we will try and cater to your needs.
14. What do I do if I get lost on campus?
If you find that you are lost on campus ask someone how to get back to the Eastern Ave Complex on Eastern Ave. There are maps around the campus on the information boards. You will be taken on a campus tour when you arrive so you will become somewhat familiar with the grounds. Also, there are always campus security staff patrolling the campus.
