The Science Students' Transition Workshop is an opportunity to meet other incoming students with whom you will be studying during your first year at the University of Sydney, before classes start in March. The workshop also provides the opportunity to meet current staff.
This one day program will be hosted on Sunday, 24th February, 2008 at the University of Sydney.
The most important aspect of the workshop is that your day will be structured so that you will meet other students who will, (for two or three of your units of study) be in the same laboratory sessions and/or tutorials as you when you start your degree.
So on your first day of university, you will be in classes with friends you have met at the workshop.
(Students do not receive their timetable at the transition workshop, this is available online via your MyUni account usually a week before the Semester starts.)
Who attends the Workshop?
There are two separate programs run on the same day for incoming Science Students and their Parents.
Why attend the Workshop?
One of the problems that confronts students beginning their first year of university studies is the difficulty in adapting to a new study and social environment.
The Faculty has developed the Workshop to help familiarise you with the University, provide advice on how to cope with tertiary study and help you establish contact with other students.
The workshop has been running successfully since 1997, with more than 300 students attending annually.
What does it cost?
The student program has a non-refundable attendance fee of $15.00.
The parents program is free of charge.

What we know about student transition
When students begin their first year at university, they experience enormous change - social, academic and personal. Their sense of purpose and identity may not be well defined, leading to a lack of orientation. Many students lose their old social group and they may feel lost and isolated in this very large community. They will need to rebuild a whole new social network at University. Also, they need to accommodate our expectations of their learning which may be different from their expectations of our teaching. In this workshop you will learn more about the transition and your role in the transition.
