Combined Science Degrees
Combined degrees allow students to complete a course of study which leads to the award of two degrees. Combined degrees are usually five years in length and very popular as they allow students to combine a range of interests at University.
Combined degrees are an excellent choice if you have enjoyed a range of disciplines at school, or if you would like to add another dimension to your science study.

How Combined Degrees work
Each combined degree offered in the Faculty of Science will have it's own individual structure and enrolment plan however this is a general guide to how combined degrees can work;
In the first three years most students are recommended spend most of their time studying in one degree area whilst using "elective" options in that degree to study in the second degree area.
Thus when they reach the end of three years students may have completed the requirements for one half of their combined degree and many of the junior units for the second half. Students can then spend the next two years completing the second degree area.
Studying at the Advanced Level in a combined degree
If you wish to do the BSc (Advanced) as part of a combined degree, you must apply using the UAC code for the normal level combined degree and then bring in evidence of your ATAR when you come in to enrol (ie. there is no separate UAC code for combined degrees where you want to combine one degree with an advanced science degree). At enrolment, provided that you have the required ATAR, you can then be placed in the Advanced stream where available.
The Bachelor of Science in Combined Degrees
Each combined degree has an enrolment guide which staff will help you with when you come in to choose your subjects.
For more information on Bachelor of Science element of Combined Science degrees, visit the course information for the BSc.
Combined Degrees and Honours in Science
In some combined degrees once a student has completed the requirements for the BSc they may elect to study Honours in Science for a year before continuing with the second half of their combined degree.
Other students may complete all five years of the combined degree before deciding to study an Honours year.
Science & Arts
2009 UAI - 83.15
ATAR equivalent - 84.55
Students normally complete four years studying 48 credit points each year. These must include:
- 12 credit points of mathematics
- 24 junior science credit points
- At least 96 credit points from science subject areas including a major
- At least 72 senior credit points from the major studies in Arts
Administered by the Faculty of Science, the Science/Arts program allows students to combine a range of interests and complete a major in both science and arts.
Students who meet the admission requirements for the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) or the Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics) can gain admission to the BSc (Advanced)/BA or the BSc (Advanced Mathematics)/BA. (There is no separate UAC code for students wishing to combine advanced science with arts; so to apply for a Bachelor of Science (Advanced)/Arts degree, students apply through UAC using the same UAC code as the normal BSc/BA degree. At enrolment, students must supply evidence of their ATAR if they wish to gain entry into the advanced science stream of the BSc/BA degree.)

Commerce & Science
2009 UAI - 94.10
ATAR equivalent - 94.55
Students with an interest in science and commerce can follow this program for five years and obtain two degrees. Although there are some set units the number of possible combinations are extensive. Students study a mixture of science and commerce subjects throughout their degree.
Contact the Faculty of Economics and Business for further information.
Science & Law
2009 UAI - 99.55
ATAR equivalent - 99.55
The combined science and law degree meets a demand for science graduates with legal training. If you want to study combined science and law you will need to study for five years full-time. Students spend the first three years studying mostly science subjects with some law subjects. The final two years are spent completing law subjects. Students can major in any science area available in the Bachelor of Science. It is also possible to combine the BSc (Advanced) or BSc (Advanced Mathematics) with law. Students who don’t gain entry into Science/Law have the option of completing their science degree and, if they do well enough, completing the graduate law program. Graduate law requires three additional years of full-time study.
Information Technology & Science
2009 UAI - 91.10
ATAR equivalent - 91.80
This program emphasises the natural synergy between information technology and science: all Science areas involve using information technology and many Science graduates work in information technology.
For more information contact the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies.
Information Technology & Medical Science
2009 UAI - 91.80
ATAR equivalent - 92.45
Students interested in information technology and medical science have the opportunity to study both degrees simultaneously over 5 years. Graduates will adapt to the changing needs of the profession as a result of multidisciplinary study.
For more information contact the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies.
Engineering & Science
2009 UAI - 90.45
