Master of Applied Science (Health Psychology)

Health psychology is the field of psychology devoted to the study of the promotion and maintenance of health; the causes and detection of illness, the prevention and treatment of illness, and the improvement of health care systems and health care policy.

Overview

The Master of Applied Science (Health Psychology) [MApplSc(HealthPsych)] is an articulated postgraduate program which teaches the theory and practical applications of health psychology. MApplSc(HealthPsych) is designed to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of health psychology.

Students enrolled in the MApplSc (HealthPsych) and it’s articulated programs may undertake study in either part-time or full-time mode.

University of Sydney Advantage

Health psychology is an area of rapidly growing interest among psychologists and other health professionals. There are no existing comparable programs currently offered in Sydney. It is also possible to tailor the program towards your own specific interests as there are a large range of electives from which to choose.

Program Outcomes

This program is designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of health professionals interested in the growing area of health psychology: for example, people working within the Department of Health and other organisations, charities and research groups, allied health professionals, psychology students, geneticists and genetic counsellors. These programs will allow these individuals to pursue health psychology careers within the health, academia and government. These programs are professional development courses and are not accredited for Australian Psychological Society membership or NSW Psychology registration purposes.

Mode of Delivery

The program will be taught at the Camperdown and Darlington campuses, with some units of study offered at the University’s Cumberland campus. The majority of classes will be taught within the normal teaching hours of 9am and 8pm.


Admission Requirements

Students must have either a four year psychology degree or a three year degree in a cognate discipline with at least two years relevant employment experience.

Students can articulate from Certificate to Masters by obtaining Distinction level results at the Certificate level.

To obtain entry into the research Masters stream, students will need to have either a four year psychology degree on entry or obtain distinction or better at the Certificate level.

GradCertApplSc(HealthPsych):

  • satisfactory completion of: three core units of study PSYC5010, PSYC5011 and PUBH5018, and six credit points (cp) from elective units of study

GradDipApplSc(HealthPsych):

  • satisfactory completion of: four core units of study PSYC5010, PSYC5011, PUBH5018 and BACH5268, and 12 cp from elective units

MApplSc(HealthPsych):

  • satisfactory completion of: four core units of study PSYC5010, PSYC5011, PUBH5018 and BACH5268, and 24 cp from elective units
