Master of Applied Nuclear Science

The Master of Applied Nuclear Science (MAppNucSci) and the Graduate Diploma in Applied Nuclear Science (GradDipApplNucSci) are qualifications which enable physical scientists to enter the specialist field of applied nuclear science, which encompasses areas such as nuclear physics and chemistry, nuclear energy, nuclear reactors and radiation protection.

Overview

The MAppNucSci and GradDipAppNucSci postgraduate award programs are designed to meet the growing needs both within Australia and globally for individuals with specialist postgraduate education and training in nuclear science and technology. The School of Physics within the University of Sydney offers students a wide range of coursework units of study, covering the key areas of knowledge in nuclear science, including nuclear physics, radiation physics and dosimetry, reactor physics, as well environmental and health issues. The Masters program also provides research training.

University of Sydney Advantage

These programs are being offered through the School of Physics which has access to world class research facilities and attracts highly experienced teaching and research staff. The School enjoys close collaborations with the nearby Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), which operates Australia’s only research nuclear reactor, OPAL. Students undertaking the Masters program may be given the opportunity to gain research experience using the OPAL reactor and other associated facilities.

Program Expectations

Students should expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of nuclear science and its applications to physics, energy generation, health and the environment. In addition to this, students will also gain research experience. Students of both the MAppNucSci and GradDipApplNucSci should expect to gain sufficient knowledge, skills and training for a competitive edge in the nuclear science and technology industry.

Mode of Delivery

The Masters program consists of eight coursework units of study (which by themselves constitute the GradDipApplNucSci) plus a research project, which could be undertaken at ANSTO or in the School of Physics. Self-directed, interactive learning and flexible delivery are integrated aspects of the units on offer. Lectures and practical classes are conducted during weekdays.

Admission Requirements

MApplNucSci - a Bachelors degree in science or engineering with a major in physics, or an equivalent degree qualification; or completion of requirements for a GradDipApplNucSci.

GradDipApplNucSci - a bachelors degree in science or engineering with a major in physics, or an equivalent degree qualification.

Program Requirements

GradDipApplNucSci:
- satisfactory completion of 48 credit points

MApplNucSci:
- satisfactory completion of 72 credit points

After Graduation

The MAppNucSci and GradDipApplNucSci programs provide postgraduate qualifications that may enable students to gain entry into the specialist field of nuclear science and technology or into occupations where knowledge of this field is desirable. They may also provide an opportunity for those already working in the nuclear science industry to gain further experience and training.
