Master of Medical Physics

The Master of Medical Physics (MMedPhys) and the Graduate Diploma in Medical Physics (GradDipMedPhys) are the entry level qualifications that medical physicists have as physical scientists who apply their knowledge and training in many different areas of medicine including the treatment of cancer, medical imaging, physiological monitoring and medical electronics.

Overview

These postgraduate medical physics programs are designed to meet the global demand for graduate scientists with the knowledge, understanding and expertise to work within the highly scientific and technical medical environment of medical physics. Physics at the University of Sydney offers students a wide variety of coursework units of study in radiation physics, radiation dosimetry, anatomy and physiology, instrumentation, radiotherapy physics, medical imaging physics, image processing, radiation biology, health physics and research methodology. Higher research programs of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MSc) are also available through the School of Physics.

University of Sydney Advantage

These programs are being offered through the School of Physics at Australia’s oldest and most prestigious university. The University has a longstanding tradition of excellence in both teaching and research. The School attracts highly experienced teaching staff and has access to world-class research facilities within University teaching hospitals in the greater Sydney area.

Program Expectations

Students should expect to gain knowledge and skills enabling them to find employment in the areas of medical physics applied to the treatment of cancer, medical imaging, physiological monitoring and medical electronics.

Mode of Delivery

The program consists of eight coursework units of study (which by themselves constitute the GradDipMedPhys) plus a research project, which would usually be undertaken in a hospital. Self-directed, interactive learning and flexible delivery are integrated aspects of the programs on offer. Classes and laboratory sessions are taught during the day with some laboratory work undertaken in the evenings.

Admission Requirements

  • GradDipMedPhys:
    - a Bachelor degree in physics, physical sciences, engineering or equivalent
  • MMedPhys:
    - a Bachelor degree in physics, physical sciences, engineering or equivalent

Program Requirements

GradDipMedPhys:
- satisfactory completion of 48 credit points (cp)

MMedPhys:

After Graduation

The GradDipMedPhys and MMedPhys provide the entry level qualification for medical physicists working in a hospital medical physics department. Both programs are accredited by the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine. Graduates of these programs will be able to apply for trainee medical physicist positions in hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. Medical physicists employed in hospitals often undertake research studies through a PhD research program.
